Meditation is becoming more common in the West. When Transcendental Meditation gained popularity in the ’60s and ’70s, it was still a little “out there” for mainstream America. But nowadays even many hospitals offer meditation as a treatment option for some patients, because the research shows it is beneficial. But the long tradition of meditation in the East is about more than sitting still and clearing the mind. It doesn’t just ease stress and promote health. It generates supernormal abilities. That’s what the yogis say. That’s what Dean Radin, Ph.D., investigates scientifically. Radin is the chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). He earned a degree in electrical engineering, magna cum laude with honors in physics, from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, and then an MS in electrical engineering and a PhD in psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
