Beijing to Help Expand Solomons Biggest Hospital Amid Influence Battle in South Pacific

In a sign of strong ongoing ties between Beijing and the Solomon Islands governments, officials from both countries have signed-off on the construction of a new medical centre at the National Referral Hospital in the capital Honiara. The hospital is the largest in the Pacific nation with 300 beds and 50 doctors with the new centre to focus on diagnosing heart problems before expanding to offer renal specialised services and other non-communicable diseases. “A big thank you to the government and people of China,” Pauline McNeil, health permanent secretary, said in a statement released by the Solomons government. McNeil signed the minutes of an on-site feasibility study with the deputy head of the Chinese Embassy to the Solomon Islands, Yao Ming. ...
