An employee for a nonprofit homeless outreach group was shot in San Francisco Friday just two weeks after Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti proposed an $8 million contract extension with the group, which replaces law enforcement responding to homeless-related 911 calls with its unarmed “street ambassadors.” An employee with Urban Alchemy—which hires formerly incarcerated or homeless individuals to respond to homeless incidents—was shot while on duty in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District April 29. This was the second instance of violence toward an Urban Alchemy employee this year.
