Climate Shift on Planet Neptune Could Reflect Seasonal Changes in Atmospheric Chemistry: Study

Post by claireokc »

Dramatic changes in temperatures in the planet Neptune’s atmosphere over the past two decades could be due to seasonal changes in the ice planet’s atmospheric chemistry, or random weather patterns, among other factors, according to a new study. New research led by space scientists at the University of Leicester and published in The Planetary Science Journal shows a decline in Neptune’s thermal brightness since reliable thermal imaging began in 2003. The study saw scientists use observations in thermal-infrared images taken over 17 years, including those taken by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope and Gemini South telescope in Chile, among others. ...
